Featured - Jonathan Minster - When is a portrait a still life?

With his latest project, Jonathan has been doing his bit to try and encourage more women into creative roles – an excellent cause we feel!

But we don’t just love the project because of that, we love it because what started out as a personal project has ended up as a great client campaign.  And, of course, because the shots look fantastic – they’re atmospheric, just that little bit haunting and capture the girls’ mesmorised expressions beautifully.
So how did this all come about?  Well, the idea for the project was a true collaborative affair…..Jonathan teamed up with Creative dynamo Elliot Harris with the simple desire of producing an experimental, creative-lead personal project together.  But should they do portraits or still life?

The inspiration came when Elliot saw just how completely motionless all his girls became when they watched the iPad - an observation that most parents can probably relate to! And so, the idea was born – Jonathan would photograph four of Elliot’s five daughters (yes that’s right, they are all Elliot’s daughters!) watching the iPad to capture that eerie calm you’d never normally associate with kids.  It would be the perfect blend of a portrait and a still life.

But the idea soon caught the attention of none other than our old pal, Emma Taylor, who, at the time, was working with Stanley’s Post, a fave post house of ours.
As the team at Stanley’s were planning a new intern drive to encourage more women into the creative industry, they felt the project would fit their campaign perfectly - all that was needed was for Jonathan and Elliot to swap the iPad for a big screen to make the shots relevant to Stanley’s, without sacrificing the initial creative idea.  Perfect.  And that’s how a great client campaign was borne out of a desire for creativity - a truly refreshing approach.

Life in the fast lane – Phil Sills on car photography

Vue photographer Phil Sills has been in the business of photographing cars for many years, so we thought we’d pick his brains about just what’s involved and if it’s all it’s cracked up to be.

Vue: So, Phil, how did you first get into car photography?
Phil Sills: It all started when an art director was doing a brochure for Ascari, a British built super-car, so it was a pretty good start, to be honest!  I treated it like a big still life product because this is what I knew and it actually worked really well as I got some lovely composed images based around the unique design features of the car.  I still take the same approach today....

Showcase - Alan Powdrill #2

Over the past few months, ad agencies VCCP, WDMP, DLKW Lowe and Publicis Dialog Paris have all turned to our very own Alan to take some striking portraits for their latest campaigns. Tinged with Alan's characteristic style and humour, they make for an eclectic showcase that we're sure will raise a few eyebrows....and of course the odd smile!
